Ode to Street Food #2

I know, I have already made my praises to the wonders of China street food, but I am back again to say that I have discovered new, equally wonderful street food in my travels. This will be brief, but it would not be fair to leave out my new friends.

While hiking through villages North of Longshan, I discovered two new succulent vices. The first is a dried and squished persimon. It is not entired dried, so there is still some moisture it in. And it is squished to make it into a disk shape, like a hockey puck (but a tad smaller). It is a deep orange and oh so good. I had tried some in Kunming, but was not impressed. I saw persimons growing on trees while we were hiking though, so the fact that the ones I tried in the area are exponentially better has some logic to it. The second thing I discovered is dried figs. I think. They are small, tan in color, mostly dried, and taste like figs, but don't LOOK like figs. Quite puzzling, but extremely delicious.

(This entry was started a very long time ago and sat in draft form for longer than it should have, explaining the late date of its publication.)

I'm so envious. We couldn't eat street food in India or we'd probably die of dysentery.

When are you back in CA, Megan? I haven't been keeping up with your adventures (just found this blog), but I'd love to see you. Let me know, okay? tamarkreps at yahoo dot com.
